"Enriching the human creative spirit through nurturing and supporting visual arts"
| About the Art Center The Art Center was formally established in 1977 to enrich the quality of life in Los Alamos by nurturing and supporting the human creative spirit through visual arts. The Art Center traces its roots back to the early post-war years and the Los Alamos Arts and Crafts Association, with later ties to the Los Alamos Arts Council and Pajarito Art League. Under the direction of John Werenko, the Art Center presently operates an art gallery and gallery shop and offers classes throughout the year for children and adults. It hosts Arts and Crafts Fairs in August and October and holds a popular Affordable Art Sale each December. Located
in the heart of the downtown Los Alamos historic district, the Art Center
resides in Fuller Lodge, a magnificent vertical-log structure designed by
John Gaw Meem in 1928 for the Los Alamos Ranch School. The Art Center's
gallery space features an eclectic variety of art
exhibitions showcasing local and regional artists. Opening
receptions are held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the first Friday of each
exhibition. The Art Center's Gallery Shop provides a shopping experience unique to Los Alamos. Operating on a juried consignment basis, it offers fine arts and fine crafts by area artisans. The shop is presently stocked with work by 87 member artists. Through classes, workshops, and gallery talks organized by the Art Center, local artists share their knowledge of art media and techniques with the community. The center regularly offers courses in ceramics, painting, drawing, and a variety of niche classes. In addition to Fall and Spring classes for adults and children, the Art Center offers a six-week summer Art Camp for children in grades 1 through 6. As a non-profit organization, the Art Center relies on community support through individual memberships to help fund our mission and visual arts programs. Your membership in the Art Center will help ensure that visual arts continue to play an integral role in our community. The Art Center is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information about coming programs, or to inquire about volunteer opportunities, call 662-9331 or email us at artful@losalamos.com.
